Eric Charles Clifford was the son of Colonel Sir Charles Clifford. He was commissioned into the 7th West Riding Battery Royal Field Artillery in May 1909 and was promoted to Lieutenant in November 1910. He was appointed an Acting Captain in March 1915 and an Acting Major in January 1916, being promoted to Captain in June 1916 and to Major in December 1918. Major Clifford, then serving with the 3rd West Riding Battery R.F.A., relinquished his commission on account of ill health caused by wounds, retaining the rank of Major, on 29 June 1919.
