M.S.M. London Gazette 3 January 1920: ‘For services rendered with the British Forces in North Russia, Archangel Command.’ One of only three Archangel awards of the M.S.M. to the regiment.

William Patrick Warnock was born on 26 April 1897. He joined the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in 1916 and served in Mesopotamia from March 1917 to October 1918, and in North Russia from May to September, 1919 (M.S.M., B.W.M., Vic.). After serving 10 years 59 days in the ranks and 13 years 59 days as Warrant Officer Class 2, he was commissioned as Lieutenant and Quartermaster on 22 March 1938. He was Quartermaster with the 1st Battalion during the retreat though Dunkirk in 1940, and ended the war with the rank of Major (Q.M.), a well known regimental character known as ‘Popeye.’
