William Lewis was born in Bilston, Staffordshire and enlisted at Barnsley, Yorkshire. He had served in the Second Boer War. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on the 1st day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, aged 39 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of Henry and Betsy Lewis and husband of Hannah Lewis of 18 James Street, Warsboro’ Dale, Barnsley, Yorkshire.
