Hugh de Neufville Lucas was born on 6 December 1886. First commissioned on 5 August 1905, he was appointed to the Indian Army on 19 August 1907. Adjutant to the 30th Lancers in 1913. During the Great War he served in France/Flanders, 10 November 1914-5 May 1916 and on the North West Frontier, 15 June-1 November 1916. In India he was D.A.Q.M.G. & D.A.A.G., 14 March 1917-24 February 1918, and D.A.Q.M.G. later in 1918-20. He was A.M.S. Iraq, 1-31 December 1921, and A.D.C. to the Viceroy, May 1922-March 1923. During October 1930-September 1934, he was Chief of Staff of the Bhopal State Forces. He attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in August 1931 and retired from the Indian Army in 1935.
