William Smallwood was born at Sellyoak, near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, and attested for the Worcestershire Regiment on 13 July 1892, aged 18 years 2 months. He served abroad at Malta and Bermuda, and took part in the war in South Africa from December 1899 to September 1902. He was discharged at Worcester on 12 July 1904, upon the expiration of his period of engagement. Sold with copy discharge papers.
