Richard Clarke was born in Barnstaple, N. Devon, in 1858. A Lace Twister by occupation and serving with the 1st Devon Militia, he attested for the 2nd Battalion 11th (North Devon) Regiment at Barnstaple on 29 September 1876, aged 18 years, 6 months. He served in India, January 1878-July 1880; Afghanistan, July 1880-January 1881; India, January-February 1881; Egypt, January 1891-December 1892, and India, December 1892-January 1894. Promoted to Colour Sergeant in October 1897, he was transferred to the Permanent Staff of the 5th Volunteer Battalion Devon Regiment in 1894 and awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1895. He was discharged at Exeter as Acting Sergeant-Major on 30 April 1907. Sold with copied service papers and a quantity of other research.
