Four: Able Seaman R. Dobeer, Royal Navy

South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1877-8 (Ord., H.M.S. “Active”); Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, no clasp (A.B., H.M.S. “Achilles”); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R. (Rich. Dobeer, Comd. Btn., H.M. Coast Guard), impressed naming; Khedive’s Star 1882, unnamed, mounted as worn, first two with contact marks and edge bruising, nearly very fine and better (4) £1000-1200

Richard Dobeer was born in Plympton St. Mary, Devonport, on 4 September 1859. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on the Impregnable on 9 September 1875. Advanced to Boy 1st Class in September 1876, he served on the Active, October 1877-October 1879, being promoted to Ordinary Seaman in November 1877. He was advanced to Able Seaman when on the Achilles in May 1881, Leading Seaman when on the Bellerophon in December 1885 and Boatswain’s Mate when on the Hercules in October 1889. He was transferred to the Coastguard in March 1891; his first posting being at Lyme Cobb. Sold with copied service paper, roll extracts and family history.
