Five: Corporal W. Mason, Rifle Brigade

Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (No. 4358, 1st Batt. R.B.), contemporary engraved naming; Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Lucknow (3rd. Bn. Rifle Bde.), with his number ‘1424’ neatly engraved before his name; India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, North West Frontier (1424 Pte., 3 Bn. Rif. Bde.); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (1424 Pte., 3rd Bn. Rifle Bde.); Turkish Crimea 1855, British die (1st Bn. Rifle Brigade), contemporary engraved naming, all fitted with old ornate riband buckles for wearing, and contained in an old red leather case, generally very fine or better (5) £800-1000

William Mason, who was born in Chelsea, London, served for 21 years in the Rifle Brigade, 14 of them in India, including the Mutiny and North West Frontier operations with the 3rd Battalion. He had earlier served for 10 months in the Crimea with the 1st Battalion. Mason was discharged in December 1875, aged 39 years, having been awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in the same year, and appears to have settled in Wimbledon; sold with an original portrait photograph of him wearing his medals, together with photocopied medal roll verification.
