H.M.S. Eagle was laid down as the Chilean battleship Almirante Cochrane, sister ship to the Almiralte Latorre. With the onset of war both were purchased; whilst the latter was completed as the battleship H.M.S. Canada, the former was completed as an aircraft carrier.
