Three: Ship’s Steward A. J. Cripps, Royal Navy

Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Somaliland 1902-04 (Sn. Stewd. H.M.S. Hyacinth); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Sh. Stewd., H.M.S. Alexandra), impressed naming; Khedive’s Star, undated, with Tokar clasp, unnamed, first two with contact marks, nearly very fine and better, very scarce (3) £500-600

Arthur James Cripps was born in Axminster, Devon, on 21 March 1868. He entered the Royal Navy as a Ship’s Steward Boy in February 1883. He was advanced to Ship’s Steward Assistant when on Boscawen in March 1886. Serving on the Sandfly, June 1890-December 1893, he was promoted to Ship’s Steward in July 1892. The clasp for the action at Tokar on 19 February 1891 was issued to a total of only 172 officers and ratings of the Royal Navy; 63 to H.M.S. Sandfly and 109 to H.M.S. Dolphin. A further six Seedies on each ship also received it. Cripps is confirmed on the roll as Ship’s Steward’s Assistant aboard Sandfly. He was pensioned ashore in April 1906.
