George Thomas Richard Webb was born in Oxford on 18 March 1879. A Clerk by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Marines at London on 9 February 1897. As a Private serving aboard the Aurora he served as a member of the Seymour Expedition in the China War of 1900. His service papers record, ‘Landed with C. in Chiefs Expedition to Peking. Served with Tientsin (?) defence force, took part in capture of Nankin (?) City. Served with Expedition which resulted in Capture of Peking; at Capture of Peipang (?) Arsenal, 27 June 00’. Private Webb purchased his discharge on 3 July 1906. He was later a Superintendent of Police in his home city of Oxford. Sold with copied service paper.
