This lot was sold as part of a special collection, Medals for the Boxer Rebellion 1900 to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

H.M.S. Orlando was an Armoured Cruiser of 5,600 tons, built by Palmer at Hebburn-on-Tyne and launched in August 1886. A total of 35 officers and other ranks of the ship were entitled to the China Medal with single clasp ‘Taku Forts’.

Able Seaman F. Ashley is noted as ‘Run 17/9/02’, but a further note says that he was allowed to keep his medal.
