Francis Andrew Pontin was born in Fairford, Gloucestershire. on 15 May 1856. A Plasterer by occupation, he entered into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on Impregnable on 3 December 1872 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in January 1874. Promoted to Ordinary Seaman 2nd Class in June 1874 when on the Royal Adelaide, he served on the Egeria, November 1874-December 1877, being promoted to Ordinary Seaman in January 1877. He was advanced to Able Seaman on the Britannia in July 1879, Leading Seaman on the Himalaya in March 1884, Petty Officer 2nd Class on the same ship in March 1885 and attained the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class on the Cambridge in November 1891. Petty Officer Pontin was pensioned ashore on 16 June 1895. Sold with copied service papers.
