Military General Service 1793-1814, 10 clasps, Roleia, Vimiera, Talavera, Busaco, Salamanca, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Orthes, Toulouse (John Beaman, 40th Foot) edge bruising and contact marks, therefore good fine £2500-3000

First recorded as having been sold at Glendining in May 1906 when in pair with a renamed Waterloo. At Glendining’s in February 1919 the Waterloo is offered alone and stated to be with a clasp inscribed ‘In 17 Engagements’.

John Beaman was born at Melford, near Bath, and attested for the 40th Foot at Taunton, Somerset, on 2 September 1807, aged 18. He served in the ‘Peninsula during the campaigns of 1808, 1809, 1810, 1811, 1812, 1813 & 1814. In America three months. At Waterloo. In New South Wales five and a half years. East Indies three hundred and sixty days.’ He was discharged on 9 August 1831 in consequence of ‘chronic catarrh and pain in the breast - a most deserving and excellent soldier.’ Sold with copy discharge papers.
