Military General Service 1793-1814, 3 clasps, Roleia, Vimiera, Talavera (James Couzins, Corpl. 29th Foot) edge bruise, otherwise good very fine £1200-1400

Sold by Sotheby in February 1921 and ex Leyland Robinson Collection and Phillips Collection 1965.

James Couzins was born at Chitway, Wiltshire, and enlisted into the 49th Foot in December 1792. He transferred to the 29th Foot on 11 December 1794 and served in that regiment until his discharge at Chocques on 25 April 1816, in consequence of his being badly ruptured. He was apparently taken prisoner by the French at Talavera (Hayward’s Gazette December 1975 refers), Wellington being obliged to leave hundreds of sick and wounded behind as he retreated. Couzins was admitted on the Chelsea Hospital registers on 16 August 1816, and is recorded as living at Wooten Basset, Wiltshire, where he died on 25 November 1848. Sold with copy discharge papers.
