Military General Service 1793-1814, 2 clasps, Busaco, Albuhera (J. Horridge, Corpl. 3rd Foot) edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise nearly very fine £1200-1400

James Horridge was born at Bury, Lancaster, and enlisted for the 3rd Foot at Berryhead, Devon, on 4 April 1809, for unlimited service, aged 20 years 165 days. He was discharged on 15 September 1829, ‘being considered ineligible for service in India,’ and was ‘generally employed as drill Corporal to the Recruits’. Horridge was admitted to Chelsea Hospital as an ‘In Pensioner’ on 1 October 1861. Sold with copy discharge papers.

At the battle of Albuhera on 16 May 1811, the 'Buffs' suffered very severely when attacked by the enemy's cavalry, resulting in Lieutenant Latham's gallant defence of the Colour which he refused to surrender, despite receiving the most horrendous wounds, and ranks as one of the most famous incidents in the history of the regiment.
