Caleb Bell was born at Barnard Castle, near Sunderland, Co. Durham, and enlisted at Edinburgh on 12 November 1799, aged 17, for unlimited service. He served for 18 years 73 days, including 12 years in the West Indies, 1805-17, and was a Corporal for five and a half years and a Sergeant for 157 days. He was discharged in the rank of Private at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 24 September 1818, and received his final discharge in England on 22 February 1819, ‘being worn out and inpaired vision.’ Sold with copy discharge papers and copied pages from the detailed regimental history for this period.
