Matthew Sheerin was born at Newtonforbes, near Longford, Ireland, in 1773. He joined the Irish Brigade on 27 July 1794, enlisted into the 52nd Foot on 25 September 1798, and transferred into the 27th Foot on 31 July 1799. He served in the Light Company of the 2/27th in Egypt, Calabria and Sicily, and the campaign in eastern Spain 1812-14. He was discharged at Parkhurst Barracks on 18 December 1814, in consequence of ‘being weakly’, then aged 41 and having served 20 years 156 days. Sold with copy discharge papers.
