Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Vittoria (Geo. Bennett, 9th Foot) nearly extremely fine £1000-1200

George Bennett was born in Manchester and attested for the 9th Foot at Gibraltar on 3 October 1810, aged 17 years 183 days. He served ‘Two years and five months at Gibraltar; one year and three months in the Peninsula; one year in America; three years and three months in France; seven years and nine months in the West Indies. Was wounded in the left shoulder at Vittoria.’

George Bennett was discharged on 23 May 1831, as a result of losing the sight of his left eye in an accident in Dublin when he was struck a violent blow on the face by the shaft of a ‘car’ on the night of 13 March 1831, the driver of the ‘car’ being drunk. Sold with copy discharge papers. The medal roll also shows entitlement to additional clasps for Salamanca and Nive, but the medal appears to be as issued and, considering his wounds at Vittoria, seems likely to be correct.
