Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Egypt (John Read, Secy. to Mily. Mission) scratching to rim, nearly very fine and rare £1800-2200

John Read was Secretary to the British Military Mission to Turkey which was sent out in 1799 and accompanied the Expedition to Egypt in 1801. He is shown on the medal roll under the Royal Corsican Rangers, a unit formed in 1798 of emigre French and Corsican refugees. Under the command of Captain Hudson Lowe, of the 50th Foot, the regiment was sent to Gibraltar in 1800 and so impressed Abercromby that he arranged for their uniform to be improved, armed them with Baker rifles, and detailed them to be part of his forthcoming expedition to Egypt.
