Germany, Centenary of the Death of Felix Mendelsson Bartholdy, 1947, a cast bronze medal by B. Eyermann for Koack of Leipzig, bust left, reverse standing figure, GRÜNDER DES LEIPZIGER, etc., 83mm (Niggl 1292). Very fine, rare (£40-50)

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelsson-Bartholdy (1809-47), one of the major German romantic composers, had composed no less than 12 symphonies for string orchestra by the age of 17. The reverse of the medal alludes to Mendelssohn’s founding of the Leipzig Conservatory music school in 1843; by that time he was established as the favourite composer of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
