Finland, Finland, Independence proclaimed, 1917, a bronze medal by Prof. E. Wikström, crowned arms of the Republic, stout oak tree behind, reverse robed female figure of Victory standing with lion, 72mm (cf. DW 24, 155). Extremely fine, lightly patinated (£30-40)

Issued by the Monnaie de Paris in 1923. Prof. Emil Wikström (1864-1942), sculptor and medallist from Helsingfors, studied in Vienna and Paris before returning to his native Finland in 1902. Finland was a grand duchy within the Russian Empire until 6 December 1917, when, following the Bolshevik revolution and a brief civil war, it declared independence
