Medals Related to Aviation, The R 101 Airship: a gold brooch in the form of the Airship, with black enamel lettering, 60 x 12mm, 4.8gms, 9ct, the reverse stamped with the markers mark JB & Co Ld, with pin brooch, made c. 1930., a quality made model, the purpose not known, but probably made to be sold as a momento of her maiden flight or as a memorial brooch, this could explain the black lettering. Almost as made, extremely rare (£600-800)

The R 101 disaster, 5 October 1930.
The R101 was Britain’s answer to Germany’s mighty Zeppelin, build by the Royal Airship Works at Cardington, Bedfordshire, she set off on her maiden flight on Saturday the 4th of October from Cardington, after quite a rough flight over the English Channel, she crashed near Beauvais in France early Sunday morning, only 5 people out of 54 lived to tell the tale. Sold with further details of the disaster.
