Guard’s officer’s sword owned by Lord Chelmsford who commanded Imperial troops during the Zulu War

1822 infantry pattern sword for an officer of the Grenadier Guards, the 82cm blade by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, un-numbered, etched with crowned VR, regimental device of flaming grenade within foliate panels and within a cartouche the owners crest and motto, regulation copper-gilt ‘gothic hilt’ incorporating regimental badge, folding side guard, fish-skin covered grip bound with copper wire, contained in its brown leather covered scabbard, gilding worn otherwise good condition £650-750

The crest & motto are those of Thesiger.

Frederick Augustus Thesiger, 2nd Baron, Lord Chelmsford KCB GCVO, born 13 may 1827, first commissioned into the Rifle Brigade in 1844, he exchanged into the Grenadier Guards in 1850. During his long carreer he served in the Crimea, the Indian Mutiny and Abyssinia, commanded the Imperial troops in South Africa during the Zulu War, was ADC to Queen Victoria and Lieutenant of the Tower of London. He retired a full General and died in London in 1905. Sold with further research.
