An interesting mameluke hilted sword, the 80cm flat solid back-edged blade finely etched with crowned VR cypher within foliate panels, the cross guard of the pattern authorised for General Officers in 1831, ivory grips set with copper-gilt rosettes, backstrap engraved with foliage, complete with its ornate brass scabbard having three large mounts chased with sprays of leaves, etc., the central bands with oakleaves, the bottom chape pierced through with scrolls, minor hairline cracks to ivory grips and mounts varnished overall £300-350
Presumably an earlier mameluke re-hilted for use by a general officer.
