Samuel Downes attested for service at Coventry on 11 December 1915 aged 18 years, 6 months. In April 1918 he volunteered for service in ‘Locker Lampson’s Armoured Car Unit’ of the Motor Machine Gun Section. Promoted to Serjeant at the same time, he was posted to the Mesopotamian theatre of war, landing at Basra and serving as part of the ‘Dunsterforce’. Sold with copied service papers.
