Thomas James Robins was born in East Stonehouse, Devon on 2 July 1871. He joined the Royal Navy in September 1886 as a Boy 2nd Class, becoming a Boy 1st Class on the Lion in September 1887 and an Ordinary Seaman on the Iron Duke in July 1889. He was advanced to Able Seaman on the Ruby in October 1890 and became a Petty Officer 2nd Class on the Leander in August 1897, advanced to 1st Class on the same ship in November 1899. Robins was granted the L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1904. He attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer when on the Defiance in November 1907. He was pensioned ashore and joined the R.F.R in July 1911. With the onset of war he was mobilized and as C.P.O. was based on Caesar, 2 August 1914-24 December 1915; Defiance, 25 December 1915-14 March 1916, and Vivid, 15 March 1916-24 April 1919.
