John Armet was born in Edinburgh on 2 August 1882. A Plumber’s Apprentice by trade, he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in November 1897. Advanced to Ordinary Seaman whilst on the Eclipse in August 1900, he next served on the Highflyer, August 1900-November 1903, being promoted to Able Seaman in March 1902 he served aboard the ship in the Somaliland expeditions. He served on the Hyacinth, March 1909-June 1911. Promoted to Petty Officer in October 1914, he served on the destroyer Harpy, April-November 1914 and the monitor General Craufurd, April-December 1916. He was pensioned ashore in August 1922 and joined the R.F.R. Sold with copied service papers.
