William Joseph Grocott was born in Clapton, London, on 1 July 1887. A Marine Motor Engineer by occupation he entered the R.N.A.S. as a Leading Mechanic (E) on 10 March 1915. He served on the aircraft carrier Ben-my-Chree in the Eastern Mediterranean, March 1915-January 1917, and was promoted to Petty Officer (E) on 1 August 1916. He then served at Egmont at the Port Said Seaplane Base, February-May 1917 and Depot, May-December 1917. Returning to England, he was later taken into the R.A.F. Sold with copied service paper and m.i.c.
