Montagu Wigley Bell was born in Portsmouth on 20 July 1825. He was commissioned an Ensign in the 66th Regiment on 12 July 1845 and advanced to Lieutenant on 9 April 1847. He transferred to the 7th Regiment in September 1847 and to the 28th regiment in April 1850. He died in the Crimea on 7 January 1855.
