‘Wellington Letter’, from Viscount Wellington addressed to ‘His Excellency The Honble. Admiral Beckeley’, dated ‘Cea(?) April 17th 1810, No.23’, 324 x 202mm., folded into four, handwritten on two sides, with a note on the fourth, slight fold marks, good condition £100-140

‘Sir
There is a Man by the name of Stephen Bromley who had deserted from the 4th Dragoons now in charge of the Provost Marshall at Lisbon; and I shall be very much obliged to you if you will let me know whether you will receive him into one of His Majesty’s Ships, if he should be discharged from the Service. He is a stout Man and has not been guilty of any crime which renders him infamous.

I shall be much obliged to you if you will send to England by the first opportunity one officer, four Serjeants and 60 Privates of the 28th Light Dragoons respecting whose passage, the Assistant Quarter Master General will apply to the Agent of Transports.

I have the honor to be Sir Your most obedient servant, Wellington’.

The letter and quite possibly the signature would have been written by a clerk at Wellington’s behest. A note in another hand on the second side, confirms that Wellington’s requests in regard to both man and 23rd Light Dragoons, were carried out.
