Grave Marker, in the form of a Latin Cross, 63 x 48.5 x 2.4cm., iron, one side bearing an embossed inscription in German gothic script, ‘.... Rudolph von Heinemann, herzogl. Braunschweig. Oberstleutnant, geb. 8 Mai 1789, geblieben bri Belle-Alliance 18 Juni 1815’, heavily rusted, sold as found £200-300

An unusual and somewhat macabre piece of memorabilia relating to the Battle of Waterloo. The cross is named to Lieutenant-Colonel Rudolph von Heinemann, Quartermaster General of the Brunswick Contingent, who died at Waterloo 18 June 1815. The farmhouse of ‘La Belle Alliance’ provided the headquarters of the French army on the morning of the battle and was the proposed (German) name for the battle fought at Waterloo.

Very heavy, not suitable for posting.
