Walter Delooze was born in Winchester, Hampshire and enlisted in the Grenadier Guards in London in July 1904, aged 18 years. Posted to the 3rd Battalion, he subsequently served as a Lance-Corporal in No. 8 Company in South Africa from October 1899 to July 1902, was mentioned in despatches by Lord Roberts (
London Gazette 10 September 1901) and was awarded the D.C.M., the latter quite possibly for acts of gallantry at Belmont or Modder River back in November 1899. Delooze afterwards reverted to the rank of Private and was discharged to the Army Reserve on his return to the U.K.
