Alexander Michael St. Leger Ramsay-Murray was born in Bedford on 18 May 1917. He was educated at Bedford School and at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge where he gained a B.A. At both school and university he was an Officer Cadet, 1932-36 and 1938-39 respectively. Ramsay-Murray was appointed a 2nd Lieuutenant in the Royal Artillery in September 1939 and was posted to the 12th Field Regiment R.A. He was attached to No.3 Commando, June-September 1940. With the 12th Field Regiment he served in Malta, October 1940-May 1942 and was promoted to Lieutenant in January 1941. During May 1942-April 1943, he was posted to the 5th Coastal Regiment Royal Malta Artillery and was appointed Adjutant. He was posted back to the 12th Field Regiment (Malta and B.N.A.F.), April-November 1943 and then to the 18th Medium Regiment R.A. (B.N.A.F. and C.M.F.), November 1943-March 1945, being appointed Acting-Major in April 1943, Temporary Major in July 1943, War Substantive Captain in August 1943 and 2i/c of the 18th Med. Regt. in December 1944. Serving in Malta, Italy and the Balkans, he was mentioned in despatches for his services in Italy. After a period in the U.K. he was posted to India with the 86th Medium Artillery Regiment, July 1945-May 1946; followed by a period at the Staff College, Camberley, May-December 1946. He was promoted to Captain in January 1946. Ramsay-Murray was posted to Palestine, May 1947-June 1949 and served in the Far East, September 1949-June 1950; in January 1951 was promoted to Major. After further home service he was appointed D.A.A. & Q.M.G. H.Q. Armoured Division, with the British Army of the Rhine, April 1951-April 1953and then D.A.Q.M.G. at the War Office, June 1955-July 1957. He was appointed G.S.O.2 at G.H.Q. FARELF, September 1957-January 1960; D.A.M.S. at H.Q. B.A.O.R., March 1960-February 1962, and was G.S.O.1 with the Interservices Secretariat, March 1962-March 1964 and G.S.O.1 H.Q., B.A.O.R. in May 1964. He attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1963 and retired from the Army on 13 February 1965. Sold with his Officer’s Record of Service Army Book 439; Army Form B199A giving his service details; several vaccination certificates; a large number of photographs and copied research.
