Three: Flying Officer D. J. Rose, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve

1939-45 Star; Air Crew Europe Star; War Medal 1939-45, all unnamed, extremely fine (3) £180-220

Desmond James Rose was commissioned a Pilot Officer on probation (emergency), R.A.F.V.R., from Leading Aircraftsman on 6 June 1942 and was promoted to Flying Officer on 6 December 1942. Posted to No.115 Squadron in January 1943, he was killed in action on his first operational mission on 13 February 1943. His was the only one of five Wellington bombers, detailed to attack Lorient, that failed to return.

Sold with condolence slip to ‘Flight Lieutenant D. J. Rose’ and medal forwarding box addressed to ‘Mrs W. E. Rose, 3, North Lodge Road, Branksome, Dorset’. Also with extracts from 115 Squadron Operations Record Book and Gazette extracts.
