William Herbert Gibbons was born on 13 July 1901 and joined the Royal Navy on 13 July 1919, entering the Submarine Service as an E.R.A.3 in 1926. In 1933 he was based on the depot ship Medway with the 4th Submarine Flotilla on the China Station, serving on Parthian. The same year he was awarded the Long Service medal. In 1935 he served with the 1st Submarine Flotilla on the Oswald. During the Second World War he served on the submarines Perseus, May 1939-October 1941, and Oberon, September 1942-May 1943.
