James Lloyd Murphy was born on 18 November 1879. He was first commissioned on 17 January 1900 and appointed to the Indian Army on 7 April 1901. Promoted to Captain in the 79th Carnatic Infantry on 7 February 1910; he was advanced to Major on 7 February 1916. During the Great War he served in the Mesopotamian theatre of war, October 1916-October 1918, and was mentioned in despatches.
