2nd Lieutenant (Observer) Charles Joseph Byrne, Royal Air Force, was killed in action on 25 July 1918. Bryne was the Observer in a DH9 of No. 206 Squadron flown by 2nd Lieutenant F. T. Heron, R.A.F. which was in action with hostile aircraft two miles north of Gheluwe. Their aircraft was shot down and both men were killed. Byrne’s name is commemorated on the Arras Flying Services Memorial. He was the son of Thomas Byrne of 10 Upper Charlton Road, Brookes Bar, Manchester. Sold with photograph of the recipient; cap badge; medal card boxes of issue and damaged Air Ministry registered envelope, together with Memorial Plaque forwarding slip, card envelope and damaged paper envelope.
