Bertram Raymond Long was appointed a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant in the 6th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment on 5 October 1915. Promoted to Temporary Lieutenant in the battalion on 1 July 1917; he was transferred as an Acting and Temporary Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on 28 March 1918. He relinquished his commission, retaining the rank of Lieutenant, on 25 March 1919.
