M.I.D. London Gazette 18 May 1917 (France, Haig) as 2nd Lieutenant, R.F.A. and 21 May 1918 (France, Haig) as Lieutenant (Acting Captain), R.F.A. (Special Reserve).

Captain John Filtness, “D” Battery, 161st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, died of wounds on 22 May 1918, aged 29 years. He was buried in the Bac-du-Sud British Cemetery, Bailleulval. John Filtness was the son of David Filtness of Brighton, Sussex. Prior to gaining his commission he had served as a Private in the 5th Mounted Rifles, serving in the German South-West African campaign. For his wartime services he was twice mentioned in despatches.
