James Howe was born in the Parish of Oldmachar, Aberdeen. A Brassfinisher by occupation, he attested for the Scots Guards at Glasgow on 28 August 1877, aged 18 years. With them he served in Egypt, 30 July-14 November 1882. He attained the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant in April 1889 and was discharged at his own request on 31 October 1898. Sold with copied service papers.
