Clarence Frederick James Gibson was born in Bermondsey, London. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the Devonshire Regiment on 25 April 1889, aged 19 years. Based firstly at Aldershot, 1889-90, he was then posted to Upper Burma, 1891-92, where he served in the North-Eastern Column under Captain T. A. H. Davies, Devonshire Regiment. Then after service in Rawalpindi and Peshawar, 1893-96, he completed his limited period of of service. He was then recalled for service in the Boer War. Sold with recipient’s Account Book; an original photograph of recipient; sleeve chevrons (3); Christmas Tin 1900 (empty) and a ‘Relief of Ladysmith’ ribbon with an associated gilt medal bearing a photo of General Buller V.C.
