David W. Evans was born in Southsea, Hampshire, on 19 April 1851. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy in October 1866. Evans joined the Penelope as an Ordinary Seaman in June 1869, was advanced to Able Seaman in May 1871, Leading Seaman in March 1872, Petty Officer 1st Class in January 1875 and Chief Petty Officer in April 1877. He left the ship in May 1880. Sold with a folder containing copied service papers.
