Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Belmont, Modder River, Orange Free State, Transvaal (3617 Pte. J. Campbell, North’d Fus.) nearly extremely fine £400-500

Private J. Campbell was mortally wounded during the defence of Lichtenburg on 3 March 1901, and died two days later.

The occupation of De la Rey’s home town of Lichtenburg by a garrison of 600 British soldiers caused him some personal offence and he resolved to end it. With a force of about 1500 men he stormed the town on Sunday 2 March 1901. However, one of the commandos commenced the attack on horseback, instead of on foot, before the other commandos were in their proper positions. Colonel Money, commanding the British garrison, witheld sustained attacks throughout the night until the Boers retreated in the early hours of 3 March, De la Rey realising that he could not take the town without suffering severe losses.
