Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen (3996 Cpl. T. W. Maloney, Rl. Dublin Fus.) suspension refixed but slack, heavy edge bruising and some marks to the Queen’s head, nearly very fine £80-100

Thomas Michael Mahoney was born in Camberwell, London. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Royal Dublin Fusiliers at London on 3 February 1891, aged 18 years, 9 months. Posted to the 2nd Battalion in November 1892, he served in the East Indies, November 1892-May 1897 and South Africa, May 1897-November 1898. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1898 but rejoined the Colours in July 1899. Further service in South Africa followed, 10 November 1899-10 November 1900. He was discharged after completing his period of engagement on 2 March 1903. With the onset of the Great War he re-enlisted on 8 September 1914 and was posted to the 6th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Attaining the rank of Company Quartermaster Sergeant in April 1915, he entered the Balkan theatre of war - landing at Sulva Bay with the 6th Battalion on 7 August 1915. After 4 months service in Gallipoli he was invalided firstly to Egypt and then in December 1915, to England. In March 1917 he was posted to the 8th Battalion. and with them he served in France. He was transferred to the 1st Battalion on 16 August 1918. Suffering from a number of debilities, he was transferred to ‘Z’ Army Reserve on 11 February 1919. Sold with a number of copied service papers.
