Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State (7333 Pte. W. Nudd, Derby. Regt.), with silver chain attachment for wear from button-hole, nearly extremely fine £180-220

7333 Private W. Nudd, 4th (Militia) Battalion Derbyshire Regiment, was wounded at Roodevaal on 7 June 1900. Having been in South Africa for only a few months, the 4th Battalion Derbyshire Regiment, a militia battalion, was attacked by the Boers at Roodevaal on 7 June 1900. Though called to surrender several times, they refused and put up a gallant fight. By ten the next morning the seven companies of the battalion had lost 36 killed and 104 wounded, and only then did they surrender. They were the only militia unit of any size to be seriously engaged in the course of the war.
