Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (Lieut. W. E. R. Roberts, 3rd Bengl. Eurpn. Regt.) minor contact marks, good very fine £320-360

William Edward Russell Roberts was born on 17 October 1831, the son of Captain Claude Adolphus Roberts, 29th Madras N.I. and Elizabeth Lucy. He was baptised at St. Thomas’s Mount, Madras on 23 March 1832. He was educated at Clapham Rise School. Roberts was appointed an Ensign in the 1st N.I. in April 1851, transferred to the 3rd European Regiment in November 1853 and promoted to Lieutenant in June 1856. He served in the supression of the Indian Mutuny, with the 3rd European Regiment, employed against the forces of Tantia Topi under Brigadier Showers. In 1861 the 3rd Bengal European Regiment was transferred to the British Army as the 107th Foot and in December 1862 Roberts was promoted to Captain in the Staff Corps. later serving with the 54th N.I., he retired as a Captain on 23 June 1863 and died on 2 October 1872.
