Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (Lt. S. New, 33rd Madras N.I.) contact marks, nearly very fine £300-350

Selwyn New was born in Clifton, Gloucestershire, on 5 March 1829, the son of Francis Thomas and Sarah Eliza New. Educated at King’s College School, London, he entered the East India Company as a Cadet on 22 November 1848, his father at the time being described as a ‘Gentleman’ residing at Melville House, Ryde, Isle of Wight. He was commssioned an Ensign with the 33rd Madras Native Infantry on 27 December 1848. Promoted to Lieutenant on 6 December 1851, he served with the regiment in the supression of the Indian Mutiny, as part of the Saugor Moveable Column. He was promoted to Captain in February 1861 and Major in December 1868. He attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in December 1874 and was appointed Wing Officer of the 29th Native Infantry in April 1875.
