William Henry Colley was born in Ellesmere, Shropshire. A Shoemaker by trade, he attested for the Shropshire Light Infantry on 16 April 1889, aged 22 years, 2 months. He served in Malta, November 1890-March 1891; Egypt, March-December 1891; Hong Kong, December 1891-December 1894 and India, December 1894-January 1897. Having completed his service he was transferred to the Army Reserve on 17 January 1897. Re-mobilized on 9 October 1899 for service in the Boer War, he served in South Africa during November 1899-October 1901. He was discharged after completing his second period of service on 15 April 1902. For his services he was awarded the Hong Kong Plague Medal and Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal and South Africa 1901. Sold with copied service papers.
