John McFarlane was born in Cargill, near Couper Angus, Perthshire. A Farm Servant by occupation, he attested for the 79th Foot (Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders) on 19 January 1878, aged 19 years. He served in Gibraltar, June 1879-August 1882 and in Egypt, August-November 1882 and was present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir. He was discharged on 9 March 1894 on the termination of his period of engagement. Sold with copied service papers.
